Intuit is a performance realized in the streets of Brooklyn on the occasion of the Dumbo Art Festival in 2011. This work marks a foundational moment in the artist’s practice: it precedes and directly informs later pieces such as Our Impermanent Walk and Rising Awareness, laying the groundwork for a line of research in which sculpture, balance, and bodily engagement unfold within public space. For the first time, the artist is no longer the sole performer activating the structure: Intuit brings together a group of dancers—both professional and amateur—invited to share an experience of extreme imbalance.
Conceived as a giant balancing device, the sculpture is hypersensitive: the weights positioned at each end are heavy enough that the slightest displacement—a hand gesture, a minimal shift of the center of gravity—can trigger an immediate tilt. Its material presence, marked by raw, almost primary colors, belongs to an abrupt palette that recurs throughout the artist’s work, enhancing the legibility of the forces at play and the physical intensity of the experience. Balance relies on intuitive assessment and on constant listening—to one’s own body, to the structure, and to the other participants.
Deprived of stable points of support, the performers must find modes of expression that endanger neither themselves nor others, turning each micro-adjustment into a choreographic decision. Intuit thus mobilizes an intelligence of movement that precedes conscious thought, where attention to the imperceptible reactions of the whole becomes the very condition of provisional balance. The piece reveals equilibrium as a relational, fragile, shared state—an experience in which courage emerges less from risk-taking than from the capacity to listen and to respond.

Intuit est une performance réalisée dans les rues de Brooklyn à l’occasion du Dumbo Art Festival en 2011. Cette pièce constitue une étape fondatrice dans le travail de l’artiste : elle précède et informe directement des œuvres ultérieures telles que Our Impermanent Walk et Rising Awareness, en posant les bases d’une recherche où sculpture, équilibre et engagement corporel se déploient dans l’espace public. Pour la première fois, l’artiste n’est plus seule à activer la structure : Intuit réunit un groupe de danseuses, professionnelles et amatrices, invitées à partager une expérience de déséquilibre extrême.
La sculpture, conçue comme un balancier géant, est hypersensible : les poids situés à chaque extrémité sont suffisamment lourds pour que le moindre déplacement — un geste de la main, un transfert infime du centre de gravité — provoque un basculement immédiat. Sa matérialité, marquée par des couleurs brutes et presque primaires, s’inscrit dans une palette abrupte récurrente dans le travail de l’artiste, renforçant la lisibilité des forces en jeu et la dimension physique de l’expérience. L’équilibre repose sur une évaluation intuitive et sur une écoute constante du corps, de la structure et des autres participantes.
Privées de points d’appui stables, les interprètes doivent trouver des modes d’expression qui n’exposent ni elles-mêmes ni les autres au danger, transformant chaque micro-ajustement en décision chorégraphique. Intuit met ainsi en jeu une intelligence du mouvement antérieure à la conscience, où l’attention portée aux réactions imperceptibles de l’ensemble devient la condition même d’un équilibre provisoire. La pièce révèle l’équilibre comme un état relationnel, fragile, partagé — une expérience où le courage naît moins de la prise de risque que de la capacité à écouter et à répondre.
