Around the Étang de Thau, a unifying artistic trail

FOURTEEN MUNICIPALITIES located around the Hérault lagoon have joined forces to organize a major public art commission aimed at creating a trail punctuated by works of contemporary art. This project, entitled “BAM” (for Balades artistiques en Méditerranée – Artistic Walks in the Mediterranean), brings together around twenty artists who, regardless of their level of renown, have all benefited from the same budget funded by the French State and the Sète agglomeration.
The works range from figurative sculpture to more conceptual installations. The siting of the artworks gave rise to extensive discussions between the artists, elected officials—across all political affiliations—and local administrations, in order to facilitate public accessibility. Depending on the means of transport chosen by the visitor, completing the full trail may take several days.

The case of Ève Laroche-Joubert, who designed in Vic-la-Gardiole a pontoon enabling the observation of birds, is different. Her first step was to take the pulse of the local elected officials. “I went to see the mayor, Magali Ferrier [various left; also vice-president of Sète Agglopôle Méditerranée], and I asked her what project she had in mind. She told me that the villagers were very keen to have a bird-watching observatory. The hunters, who were responsible for its realization, had envisaged a wooden structure. So I suggested that I take over and create an observatory that would also be a sculpture.”
She designed a pontoon set halfway over the water, a kind of giant shell, a very gentle form punctured with openings that allow observation. Some of these openings are positioned very low, at child height and also at wheelchair height, because the mayor introduced her to Talya, a young disabled girl to whom she dedicated the work.

QUATORZE COMMUNES situées autour de la lagune héraultaise se sont alliées pour organiser une vaste commande publique afin de créer un parcours ponctué d’œuvres d’art contemporain. Ce projet, nommé « BAM », pour « Balades artistiques en Méditerranée », rassemble une vingtaine d’artistes qui, quelle que soit leur notoriété, ont bénéficié du même budget versé par l’État et l’agglomération de Sète.
Les créations vont de la sculpture figurative aux installations plus conceptuelles. L’implantation des œuvres a donné lieu à des échanges nourris entre les artistes, les élus – toutes orientations politiques confondues – et les administrations locales, pour faciliter l’accessibilité au public. En fonction du moyen de transport choisi par le visiteur, le parcours complet peut prendre plusieurs jours.

Le cas de celle d’Ève Laroche-Joubert, qui a conçu à Vic-la-Gardiole un ponton permettant l’observation des oiseaux, est différent. Sa première démarche a été de prendre le pouls des élus. « Je suis allée voir la maire, Magali Ferrier [divers gauche, par ailleurs vice-présidente de Sète Agglopôle Méditerranée], et je lui ai demandé ce qu’elle avait comme projet. Et elle m’a dit que les villageois avaient très envie d’avoir un observatoire à oiseaux. Les chasseurs, chargés de sa réalisation, avaient pensé à une structure de bois. Donc, je lui ai proposé de prendre le relais et de créer un observatoire qui serait aussi une sculpture. »
Elle conçoit un ponton posé à demi sur l’eau, une sorte de coquillage géant, une forme très douce percée d’ouverture permettant l’observation. Certaines sont placées très bas, à hauteur d’enfant et aussi de fauteuil roulant, car la maire lui a présenté Talya, une jeune handicapée à laquelle elle a dédié son œuvre.
